bionics had been important for the technical development, first watching hands at work, people learned to create machines for sewing and weaving.
but bionics is not only to copy nature, more than this, normally we should not transform it 1:1 into technical applications.
Although technic and nature working with the same natural laws, we have to consider different dimensions and different materials. And most important, nature is complicated, the technical solution must be simple to be successful.
in the middle ages people tried to fly like a bird, but they had only the desire but not the knowledge. Maybe they didn't had the patience to study, but they also didn't have the equipment like a high speed camera or the right materials to build. With the beginning of airplane development, bionics became a science. they learned to use natural laws for analyzing . so they could understand why a bird was able to fly and they learned that they had to make it more simple while transforming it into a technical solution. These pioneers came back watching birds for many times.
the Wrights understood how to build a wing...but what's about controlling the flight? the birds can.. they also learned and found a more simple solution of this problem.
although birds cannot fly at supersonic speed, they helped to design the Concorde and TU144.......... how a big bird is landing? it uses the ground effect...........later it got more important to reduce fuel consumption .............
some people watched eagles flying and were surprised why they hat long feathers spreading at the end of the wings.....
they simulated this in the wind tunnel and realized that this reduced the air drag of the wings. From this time, you can see winglets at all airplanes.
this is the way how we use bionics.. watching anything-- make measurements and simulations -- and finally transform it into a technical application.
in my last lesson "find what you was not looking for" I show you how to handle things, maybe you watch anything interesting, while walking at the beach or forest -- maybe you get inspired
you will get a new idea for a product or at least making anything better, or you make such an important invention like the Wright brothers or like Alexander Fleming.
