This course provides students with understanding of the basic chemical principles. It provides an overview of various chemical calculation methodologies. Students will be able to apply these tools in experiments as well as real life situations.

Course Objectives

This course aims to:

Introduce the fundamental principles of chemistry

Equip students with the skills to perform chemical calculations.

Teach students how to articulate ideas pertaining to chemistry in systematic way

Explain how various chemical processes takes place

By the end of the course , the student should be able to:

• Identify the properties and composition of matter on the macroscopic and atomic scales.

• Relate the mass of a substance to the number of chemical entities comprising (atoms, ions, molecules, or formula units) and to apply this relationship to formulas and equations.

• Categorize aqueous reactions based on type and mechanism.

• Use a balanced chemical equation for the quantitative study and description of chemical reactions

• Apply the ideal gas law.

• Explain how heat, or thermal energy, flows when matter changes, how to analyze this heat for a given change and how to identify the direction and magnitude of heat flow for any reaction.

• Recognize how the electrons are distributed in atoms and how it is reflected on the behavior of elements.

• How to describe chemical bonding and how to picture a molecule

• Describe material phase changes and phase diagrams and how to calculate heat of phase change.

• Learn how to collect and analyze observations and experimental data obtained in the laboratory

• Reinforce written communication skills through laboratory reports
