In this class, we'll explore some a few British Christmas traditions that show up in some popular wizard fantasy books. While some customs are exclusive to magical worlds, many are also British Christmas traditions, so along the way, we'll be learning about British holiday traditions as well!

Part 1:Christmas Decorations

Learn about the history of Christmas trees and mistletoe. Where did these traditions come from, and what did the British have to do with them? We'll also explore the magical versions of Christmas trees and mistletoe as mentioned in Harry Potter.

Part 2: Christmas Cuisine

Learn about traditional holiday foods in the British Isles - how are they different from America?What dishes might Americans find unusual? Which of these foods are also included in the wizard world?

Part 3: Christmas Presents

We'll analyze the ten best presents Harry Potter ever received for Christmas, and the ten worst gifts he ever received. We will also discuss Christmas Crackers - a popular British (and British wizard) Christmas tradition. What's inside of them, and why?How do the magical version differ?What is the origin of Christmas crackers? Includes an instructional video on an easy way to make your own Christmas crackers.

Part 4: Is Santa Claus Actually Nicholas Flamel?

This tongue-in-cheek recording discusses all the "proof" that Santa Claus and Nichola Flamel are actually the same person.

Each part also includes extension activities, such as researching the history of Christmas trees, making a golden snitch ornament, or discussing your favorite Harry Potter-themed Christmas gifts.
