This class discusses the geologic history of the British Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland) as found in young adult wizard fantasy books. It's a great introduction to geology, the rock cycle, plate tectonics, volcanoes, and glaciers. This four part course is packed with information about the geology of the British Isles, using locations from young adult wizard fantasy books as a framework. How did they form? When did they form? Along the way, we'll learn basic geologic principles and terminology. This course is not an official product of the Harry Potter franchise and is not affiliated with the Wizarding World.

Part 1: An overview of the geologic history of the British Isles, plate tectonics and the formation of the earth's crust

Part 2: Convergent boundaries and volcanic activity, Glen Nevis, Glen Coe, metamorphic and igneous rocks, transform boundaries and the formation of Scottish lochs, such as Loch Shiel and Loch Arkaig

Part 3: Deposition and sedimentary rocks, erosion and formation of sandstone, cave formation, the Cliffs of Moher and buildings used for filming that are made of sandstone.

Part 4: Divergent boundaries, formation of limestone, the Seven Sisters cliffs, buildings used for filming made from limestone, glaciation and valley formation, the formation of the English Channel
