During the early church period, theologians battled against heresies including iconoclasm, gnosticism, doceticism, and arianism. This battle prompted a spiritual transformation in the lives of many leading up to the creation of biblical creeds as well as the compilation of theological works. Some of the doctrines theologians defended using the Scriptures include the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, the Trinity, the deity of Christ, and so forth.

This course is designed to enhance the student'sknowledge and understanding of the history of systematic theology during the early church period. This coursewill address the life andtheology of7 theologians including: (1) John of Damascus, (2) Ignatius of Alexandria, (3) Clement of Alexandria, (4) Origen of Alexandria, (5) Athanasiusof Alexandria, (6) Gregory of Nyssa, and (7) Cyril of Alexander.

At the end of this course, students will have learned terms such as the Trinity, incarnation, omnipotence, allegory, and so forth. The students will also be able to learnvaluable lessons as well as gainspiritualapplication that pertains to theimportance of the theologians that are discussed in this course.
