The National Institute of Standards and Technology, also known as NIST, provides free resources for organizations. Their Risk Management Framework, or RMF, is a set of standards and processes for applying a risk-based approach to security and privacy.

The NIST Risk Management Framework (RMF) provides a comprehensive, flexible, repeatable, and measurable 7-step process that any organization can use to manage information security and privacy risk for organizations and systems and links to a suite of NIST standards and guidelines to support implementation of risk management programs to meet the requirements of the Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA).

The NIST RMF emphasizes risk management by promoting the development of security and privacy capabilities and to information systems throughout the system development lifecycle by following a seven-step process.

More than ever, organizations must balance a rapidly evolving cybersecurity and privacy threat landscape against the need to fulfill business requirements on an enterprise level. Risk management underlies everything that NIST does in cybersecurity and privacy and is part of its full suite of standards and guidelines.
