If there is one thing that can really stop a good painting from becominga terrific painting, is the lack of values. By this I mean that all the colors appear to be of the same intensity and there is little contrast. I see this often in my teaching, and believe me when the adjustment is made it really brings a painting to life. Don't be afraid of painting with stronger colors

Layer the same colour on top of itself to get a more intense colour
You will see the difference more intense colours can make to a colouredwatercolour painting.
You will deepen your understanding by converting a colour painting into a sepia painting or monochrome painting.
