Don't let equipment be an excuse. Whatever kind of equipment you might have right now is enough to start learning. I remember learning some lead parts from famous songs on a beat-up classical guitar.

Lead playing encompasses multiple techniques which have to be mastered in order to make it really shine. It is best to separate those techniques at first and focus on them individually.

Combining them into coherent solos later on will come naturally if you know how to use each of those techniques on its own.
