There are 44 Thai consonants.
This course has 44 quick lessons. One quick lesson per letter.
There is more to writing Thai than you might be aware. Each consonant (with the exception of two) begins with a small loop, sometimes called the head. It is critical that you are familiar with, and, draw the character starting at the loop, and, knowing which way the loop spins. If the loop spins clockwise, or if the loop spins counter-clockwise makes a difference in the meaning of the letter. This course has calligraphy pages that help you to form your letters correctly.
Thai consonants also have a class system that determines the tonal value of the word.
This, too, is critical. Thai is a tonal language. Different inflections in the way a word is said changes the meaning of the word.
For example:If I say the word "my" in various ways;
This is MY guitar! (someone has taken my guitar from the backseat of my car)
This is MYguitar? (someone just gave you a guitar you have dreamed about)
This is MYguitar?! (said with sneering incredulity, you are too good to play guitar that sports colored nylon strings)
This is MYguitar. (said with a matter of fact falling off tone in your voice)
etc.
In each of these examples, you know that I mean that this guitar in question is MY guitar, or connected to me.
In Thai, depending on the tone (inflection) of the word, the meaning of the word changes.
The word MY in Thai can be the words:
My = Question word
My = New
My = To Burn
My = Wood
My = Silk
My = No
So, you can ask the question in Thai:My my my my my? (Does new silk burn?)
To which you can answer:My (no)
Now, Isuspect that new silk will burn, I do not know, but, I do know that any one of those words with the wrong tone in the wrong place makes the sentence nonsense.
That is why you need to know the consonant and the class to which it belongs, to properly indicate the tone of the word you wish to write. Writing is beyond the purview of this course, but, this is the place to start.
Once you go through the lessons, You Are Ready to Play the Game. Once you beat the game, you know your Thai consonants, how they are pronounced, what they look like and which class they belong to.
Furthermore:In this class you are provided with caligraphy pages which will greatly enhance your retention of the above-mentioned lessons on the alphabet.
The Thai alphabet is very loosely based on a Sanskrit style of writing with its own unique rules for reading. There is absolutely zero connection with the Romance or Greco-based alphabets with which most westerners are familiar.
Knowing the Thai Alphabet can cut YEARS off of your language learning journey!
