This course provides information about my doctoral occupational therapy capstone experience focusing on the use of therapy dog assisted activities in an early childhood education setting. The objectives of this presentation include identifying evidence-based benefits therapy dogs can provide, describing how to implement occupational therapy intervention sessions incorporating the use of therapy dogs in the preschool setting, and differentiating between occupational therapy services provided in the school setting vs. the outpatient pediatric setting. You will learn about different therapy dog assisted intervention activities that target several areas of pediatric developmental skill areas. Inside the resources folder, you have access to 6 different pediatric intervention activities that incorporate the use of therapy dogs. My doctoral capstone experience focused on gaining clinical practice skills in the school-based setting working with children ages 3-5, using both the push in and pull-out therapy models. As part of my capstone project, I was able to plan and implement a therapy dog visit to the school to have the students participate in therapy dog assisted occupational therapy activities. I also gained experience working in the early childhood assessment clinic as part of an interdisciplinary team consisting of an occupational therapist, speech and language pathologist, school psychologist, physical therapist, social worker, and teacher.
